25+ Years of Bicycle service experience
My passion for the bicycle has been and will be a constant in my life. I have always used the bicycle for fun, exercise, and transportation. I began exploring my hometown of Little Rock around second or third grade when I would ride to and from Jefferson Elementary. Because it was my primary source of fun, learning to keep the bicycle going became important. As I got older, the bicycles became higher in quality, and my riding, mechanical skills, and tool collection developed. I began racing sometime in high school, and that is where my fascination with efficiency began. In my senior year of high school, I won first place in the engineering category of the Arkansas State Science Fair. I designed and tested the concept of an expanding flywheel, and I had to collect data over many, many rides with the flywheel and with the control wheel. Twice a day, every day, and some in bad weather. It was genius. I had managed to make riding a bicycle, my homework.
Around 21, I moved to Texas. I lived in the Dallas-Fort Worth area for several years and married my amazing wife. This is where and when I chose to start a full-time career in the bicycle industry. We soon found Austin, Texas and moved there in 1999. At that time, Austin was like a big Little Rock with a vibrant arts and cycling scene. I worked full-time in several fantastic bicycle businesses. University Cyclery, Mellow Johnny’s, and Bicycle Sport Shop were where I honed my craft. I did all of it: sales, service, training, and management. Lots of great stories, friends, and memories from that era.
I was beginning to feel the need to expand beyond the bicycle retail business model after 20 years, and one of my favorite customers, who became one of my best friends, hired me away from the bicycle industry. I was hired as the distribution manager for a cosmetics company. Eight years later, I had worked my way up to being the Chief Operations Officer. During this time, I was a rider and team mechanic for the Peace, Love, and Happiness Charity Mountain Bike Team, which was founded and managed by the friend who had hired me. This experience was really transformative for me. I learned I had a passion for efficiency not just in bicycles, but in all things. I found that I have a fascination with the endless ways to develop and organize efficient processes in any business. The bicycle is a physical manifestation of my love for efficient processes, my archetype for efficiency.
In 2022, we decided to move back to Arkansas to be closer to family and nature. The fact that Arkansas has embraced the bicycle and has built an amazing trail network made that decision easier for me. So here I am back in Arkansas, with my own business that makes riding and playing with bicycles my homework again.
